Definição e uso

A propriedade alt define ou retorna o valor do atributo alt de uma imagem.

O atributo alt necessário especifica um texto alternativo para uma imagem, se a imagem por algum motivo não puder ser exibida (devido à conexão lenta, um erro no atributo src ou se o usuário usar um leitor de tela).

Observação: o Internet Explorer exibe o valor do atributo alt como uma dica de ferramenta ao passar o mouse sobre o elemento <img>. Este não é o comportamento correto, de acordo com a especificação HTML. Todos os outros navegadores estão seguindo a especificação e só exibirão o texto alternativo se a imagem não puder ser exibida.

Dica: Se você deseja criar uma dica de ferramenta para uma imagem, use o atributo global title.
